Answers to Common Questions:
What are Microgreens?
Microgreens are young, tender greens harvested at the peak of nutrition and flavor - after growing out of the sprout phase. These tiny plants are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients making them a powerful addition to your diet. We offer a variety of microgreens, including broccoli, red cabbage, purple stemmed radish, sunflower, pea, arugula, and dill, each with its unique health benefits and flavors.
How do you eat it?
Microgreens are incredibly versatile. In addition to adding them to baked potatoes, sandwiches, and smoothies, you can use them as a side dish, just like any other vegetable with your steak or chicken. They’re perfect for boosting the nutrition of store-bought salsas, take-out meals, or even homemade tacos, chili, pesto, burgers and quesadillas. There's almost no plate that couldn't be improved with some microgreens on it.
Do they grow back?
Microgreens are a one-time harvest. After you cut them, they don’t grow back, similar to lettuces after harvest. Microgreens, like a one-time sparkler, full of vibrant life when you cut them, offering a brilliant burst of nutrition, but they don’t grow back once harvested. Although, once they age more than a 10 days or so, you'll have a seedling and soon a full grown plant.
How do I take care of them?
Since our microgreens are sold live, they’re super fresh and easy to care for. Keep them in a well-lit area, like a windowsill, and under water them lightly as needed. They can also be kept in the fridge to slow the growing, but they won't flourish. When you’re ready to eat, just cut what you need, and enjoy the freshness.
What do they taste like?
Each type of microgreen has its own distinct flavor.
Red Cabbage: A mild and slightly sweet cabbage flavor. A great choice that won't overpower other food.
Broccoli: A mild broccoli flavor and leavy texture; Very lightly peppery, another great choice for milder flavor.
Purple Stemmed Radish: A strong green flavor and leafy texture. Radish spice with a crisp bite.
Sunflowers: A sunflower nutty flavor in a hardy dense leaf. Thick stems make this good for snacking.
Field Peas: A sweet and fresh pea flavor in a lanky tender shoot. Salads, for sure.
Arugula: A serious bold peppery flavor, like green black pepper corns.
Dill: A bright and tangy with a hint of anise in a wispy green leaf. Perfect for a little fancy flavor.
Can I grow them at home?
Yes, microgreens can be grown at home, but they require the right conditions and practices, such as: light, temperature, water and more. We are happy to help you find a growing process for yourself. You might like it.
What makes these a superfood and functional food?
Microgreens are considered superfoods because they contain highly concentrated levels of essential nutrients. For example, studies show that microgreens can contain up to 40 times more vitamins, antioxidants and phytonutrients than their mature counterparts. These same compounds can trigger the natural process where cancer cells are programmed to self-destruct, just one of the reasons these are considered functional foods.
Why are they sold live like this?
Buying microgreens live ensures they retain their maximum nutritional value and freshness. When cut at mealtime, microgreens provide a significant boost in phytonutrients compared to pre-harvested options. The freshness preserves their high levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, while giving you the most health benefits with every bite. A little harder to grow and ship, to be honest, but we think it's worth it.
